Look at your triggers

The hidden puppet master: Unveiling your triggers for growth

Have you ever felt like an invisible button gets pushed, and suddenly you react in a way you don't fully understand? These triggers are like powerful emotions or situations that have the ability to take control of your behaviour.

This worksheet will serve as your tool to delve into these triggers and uncover the ways in which your subconscious may be impacting your responses.

STEP 1

Unearthing your triggers

Identify the areas where you experience strong emotions: Reflect on recent experiences that evoked intense emotions within you, such as anger, sadness, or anxiety.

Provide a concise overview of the situation, including the individuals who were present and the events that transpired:

  • Scenario 1:

    • Situation description:

    • Individuals involved:

    • My initial reaction:

  • Scenario 2:

    • Situation description:

    • Individuals involved:

    • My initial reaction:

STEP 2

Digging deeper

Why Does This Bother Me?: Take a moment to reflect on why certain situations have such a strong impact on you. Take, for instance, when someone has the audacity to criticise your work. The underlying belief might be that one's worth is dependent on being flawless.

Identify the underlying belief that could potentially be questioned in this particular scenario:

  • Scenario 1:

    • My underlying belief:

  • Scenario 2:

    • My underlying belief:

STEP 3

Recognising patterns

Do you notice any recurring patterns in your triggers and beliefs? Make a note of them.

These patterns have the potential to uncover aspects of your true self that you may hesitate to reveal. Perhaps they all stem from a fear of not succeeding, a desire for validation, or a feeling of not measuring up.

STEP 4

Discovering the voice within

Hidden self's Response: Picture your inner self responding to these scenarios. How might one feel (unseen, unheard, unimportant)? How does it manifest itself (through behaviour or withdrawal)?

Being aware of these underlying reactions can provide valuable insights into the untapped potential you may be overlooking.

STEP 5

Reclaiming your power

Shifting your perspective: Question the negative core beliefs you discovered. Do they actually provide practical advice or assistance? Can you develop a belief that empowers you?

For instance, rather than thinking "I'm only valuable if I'm perfect," consider the perspective that your value is not contingent on being flawless. I believe in the power of learning and personal growth through mistakes.

Provide a revised belief for each situation:

  • Scenario 1:

    • My changed perspective and revised belief:

  • Scenario 2:

    • My changed perspective and revised belief:
