Play the 'Opposite' game

STEP 1

The trigger

Recognise a trigger: Consider a scenario, individual, or idea that consistently brings about distress, evokes intense feelings, or prompts a defensive reaction within you. Briefly describe it.

Typical response: Describe how you typically react to this trigger? (e.g., shut down, get upset, withdraw)

STEP 2

Playing the Opposite

Consider envisioning the opposite: Now, picture yourself responding in a way that is completely different from your usual reaction when confronted with this trigger. What changes would you make in your response? Embrace your creativity and enjoy the process!

Pay attention to the discomfort: As you engage in a different approach, did you experience any emotions such as discomfort, resistance, or anxiety? Write them down.

STEP 3

Reflection

Connecting the Dots: Have you considered the possible connections between the emotions you experienced? Could there be any underlying desires, fears, or vulnerabilities that these emotions are indicating?

As an added bonus, try repeating this exercise for various triggers in your life. Pay attention to patterns in your contrasting behaviours. They may offer valuable insights into what your shadow self is attempting to communicate.

Reveal your true self: Embrace the power of contradiction

Ever pondered what lies beneath the facade of your personality? Shadow work explores the depths of our being, uncovering the parts of ourselves that we often overlook.

Are you prepared to face your inner demons? This worksheet will walk you through the "Opposite Game," a valuable tool in shadow work that allows you to delve into the depths of your personality by examining your contrasting counterparts.

What is the antithesis of your ego?

Your conscious sense of self, according to Jungian psychology, is often referred to as the ego. It can be seen as the "mask" that you present to the world. Its opposite is not something negative, but rather the hidden aspects that you suppress. Discovering your shadow can be achieved by playing the opposite game with your ego.

Keep in mind

  • These games are meant for exploration, not for passing judgement. Avoid getting trapped in negativity.

  • Pay attention to patterns in your contrasting actions. These clues may indicate what your shadow is attempting to communicate.

  • In addition to the games, you can incorporate journaling or creative exercises to delve even further into your exploration.
