Active imagination

Beyond the dream: Befriending your shadow with imagination

Have you ever woken up from a dream feeling a bit off? Dreams have the ability to uncover aspects of ourselves that we may prefer to keep hidden.

This worksheet will help you explore your inner self and integrate the hidden aspects of your psyche that are revealed in your dreams.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Unearthing shadow material from dreams

  • Dream analysis: Reflect on your recent dreams and analyse their meaning. Recognise patterns in your experiences, feelings, and the people who bring about negative emotions. These could potentially symbolise your darker side.

  • Shadow Projection: Reflect on the traits you find fault in others, as they may be traits you unknowingly possess.

PREPARATION

Preparations

  1. Peaceful environment: Locate a cosy and serene environment where you can enjoy uninterrupted tranquilly.

  2. Mindfulness: Find inner peace and tranquilly by practicing deep breathing or engaging in meditation.

  3. Journaling: Take a moment to reflect on the dream element that symbolises your shadow. Tell me about its appearance, actions, and the emotions it brings up.

STEP 1

Engaging with the shadow

  1. Embracing the shadow visualisation: Allow yourself to close your eyes and envision the dream element (the shadow aspect) drawing near, transforming into a human shape, or beginning to communicate.

  2. Exploring the depths: Engage the shadow by asking thought-provoking questions such as "Who are you?" "What is it that you want me to understand?" or "What is the purpose of your presence here?"

  3. Active listening: Pay close attention to the responses, even if they make you feel uneasy. Take note of the overall vibe and any symbolic elements.

STEP 2

Fostering dialogue and understanding

  1. Compassionate inquiry: Approach the shadow with curiosity and acceptance, just as Mark Manson does. Embrace acceptance and openness.

  2. Understanding needs: Inquire about the shadow's viewpoint on situations or the reasons behind its inclination to behave in specific ways.

  3. Objective: Strive to comprehend the underlying motivations and unfulfilled needs of the shadow.

STEP 3

Integration and embodiment

  1. Integration: As the conversation unfolds, explore how you can incorporate this shadow aspect into your conscious being. Picture yourself embracing your shadow self, fully acknowledging its presence within you.

  2. Shifting emotions: Pay attention to any changes in your emotions or any new insights you gain about yourself.

Following the sesssion

  • Journaling: Take the time to record the conversation, emotions, and any valuable realisations that came up during the session.

  • Patience: Shadow integration requires patience and is a process that unfolds gradually. Stay committed and persistent in your practice.

  • Seeking Guidance: It may be beneficial to reach out to a therapist who specialises in Jungian psychology or shadow work.

Active imagination can be quite emotionally intense. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to pause the exercise and centre yourself.
