Art & meditation: cultivating calm & creativity

By incorporating a mindful approach, your therapeutic art experience can become a transformative journey of deep self-discovery. Practicing mindfulness enables you to fully engage with the present moment, free from any biases or criticisms. This connection with your inner self serves as a solid base for further self-discovery. Discover how practicing mindfulness can enhance your therapeutic art sessions:

Before you begin:

  • Take deep breaths: Take a moment to pause and centre yourself. Dedicate a few minutes to fully immerse yourself in the rhythm of your breath. Embrace the natural flow as your abdomen gently expands and contracts with every breath. Practicing this technique helps to soothe your nervous system and anchor you in the present moment, enabling you to approach your therapeutic art session with a mindset of receptiveness and concentration.

  • A moment of gratitude: Take a moment to appreciate the creative space and materials at your disposal. It's important to acknowledge the resources you have before diving in. Take a moment to ponder the incredible chance to explore and uncover more about yourself that awaits you. Embracing this simple act of gratitude cultivates a sense of positivity and establishes the intention for a purposeful journey.

After you've finished creating:

  • Observation with mindfulness: Step back and observe your artwork with a curious and non-judgmental perspective. Pay attention to the colours, textures, and shapes. Embrace the act of simply existing alongside your creation, without immediately assigning significance or analysis to it.

  • Body scan meditation: Take a moment to focus on the physical sensations in your body. Pay attention to any areas of tension or relaxation in your body. This can assist you in integrating the emotional experience of creating art and recognising any emotions that may have emerged during the process.

By integrating these short mindfulness exercises before and after your therapeutic art session, you'll enhance the overall experience. It enables you to approach your art with heightened awareness, navigate through any emotional challenges that may arise, and gain profound insights from your creative journey.
