Exploring self: Create masks for your outer and inner Self

We all wear masks at some point. Sometimes it's a smile, sometimes it's a reserved expression. But beneath the surface lie our true selves, our thoughts, and our feelings.

This mask-making activity is an invitation to explore this duality. We'll create two masks, one for the public you and one for the inner you. As you create, consider: What do you want the world to see? What do you keep hidden?

MATERIALS

Gather your supplies

  • Blank mask (paper mache or cardboard)

  • Art supplies (paints, markers, crayons, etc.)

  • Fabric scraps, feathers, beads (optional)

  • Scissors (if using fabric)

  • Glue (if using embellishments)

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Inner reflection

  • Find a peaceful environment and take a few moments to focus on your breath.

  • Consider how you would portray yourself to others. What qualities do you embody?(bold, humorous, imaginative)

  • Reflect on the thoughts, feelings, or experiences that you typically conceal.Anxiety, vulnerability, and joy are powerful emotions that shape our human experience.

PREPARATIONS

Find your creative zone

  • Find a quiet space: Minimise distractions and create a safe environment for introspection.

  • Take a few long deep breathes: Calm your mind and ground your emotions.

STEP 1

Public persona mask

  1. Express yourself by decorating the exterior of the mask to reflect the perception others may have of you.

  2. Incorporate colours, symbols, or images that represent the qualities you previously identified.

STEP 2

Inner self mask

  1. Flip the mask and decorate the interior to reflect your inner self.

  2. Here, let your hidden emotions, dreams, or desires come to life. Don't be afraid to experiment!

STEP 3 (OPTIONAL)

Optional explorations

  • Double-sided mask: Decorate both sides, one for your public persona and one for your inner self.

  • Layered mask: Build layers on the mask to represent different aspects of yourself.

STEP 4

Reflection

Take a moment to observe your finished mask and reflect on the following questions:

  • What message does the exterior of the mask convey about your self-presentation?

  • What insights can be gained from the hidden depths behind the mask?

  • Were there any unexpected elements in what you created?

  • How does this mask making experience affect your emotions?

Keep in mind

  • There are no correct or incorrect methods to create your mask.

  • Emphasise the importance of genuine self-expression, rather than striving for artistic perfection.

  • Consider this as a starting point for further exploration. Consider journaling or talking to a trusted friend or therapist about your experience.

Remember: This mask making activity is a tool for self-discovery. Enjoy the process and be open to what your creativity reveals!
