Exploring identity: A multitude facets of me

Who are you? That's the main question we'll tackle in this journey of self-discovery. We'll use drawing and painting to push boundaries, explore different styles, and ultimately capture the ongoing story of our personal growth.


This worksheet is designed to help you create therapeutic self-portraits that delve into your self-image and how you present yourself to the world.

MATERIALS

Gather your supplies

  • Paper

  • Drawing materials: Pencils, pens, markers, crayons, colored pencils - the choice is yours!

  • Consider exploring paints, stencils, or collage materials for a more vibrant experience.

  • An iPad can be used with a variety of drawing apps, such as Procreate.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Choose a prompt (optional)

Traditional vs. ideal: Capture the essence of two different perspectives through portraiture. One illustrating your usual self-perception, and another portraying how you aspire to be perceived.
Inner world: Create a visual representation of yourself, using symbols or imagery that reflect your emotions, thoughts, or experiences.
Masks we wear: Create a self-portrait where your face is represented as a mask. What type of mask are you currently donning? Why?
Various Aspects of your emotions: Make a collage or fragmented self-portrait. Are you feeling a wide range of emotions? How can you effectively communicate your thoughts and emotions?

PREPARATIONS

Find your creative zone

  • Find a quiet space: Minimise distractions and create a safe environment for introspection.

  • Take a few long deep breathes: Calm your mind and ground your emotions.

STEP 1

Create your self-portrait

  1. Don't stress about your artistic abilities! Embrace the freedom of self-expression.

  2. Try out various materials to discover which ones provide the most comfort and allow for self-expression.

  3. Try exploring different ways to express your emotions:

Reflection

  • Once you've finished crafting your self-portrait, it's important to set aside a moment for introspection.

  • What emotions or themes do you notice coming to the surface?

  • What insights does this self-portrait offer into your self-perception and the image you project to the world?

  • There are no right or wrong answers. This is all about your own personal journey.

  • This is a place where you can freely explore and express yourself. Embrace your intuition and find joy in the creative process!

  • Take your time and be gentle with yourself. Discovering oneself is a process that requires patience and time.
